Class levels

Yoga I is for beginning and continuing students. It introduces the fundamental principles of alignment and breath work. Primary poses and yoga basics are taught, emphasizing the standing poses, and stretching/strengthening legs, back and shoulders.

Yoga I/II is for continuing students and explores the standing, seated, twisting, balancing and backward extension postures in greater detail.  Students are introduced to Salamba Sarvangasana (Supported Shoulder Stand) plus variations.  As students become proficient, they are introduced to Salamba Sirsasana (Supported Head Stand).  Students able to practice Ardha Candrasana (Half Moon Pose) balancing in the room, and Supta Padangusthasana II while lying down with the side leg straight and at right angle to the hip are welcome (and ready) for this class.

Meditative Yoga is for beginning and continuing students. It offers a Yoga 1 level of activity, with added emphasis on enhancing your moment-by-moment awareness. Classes will explore using specific meditation techniques during and between the postures. (Offered in Newark only.)

Gentle Yoga is for students with limited mobility who require modifications to practice the yoga postures (asanas).  The class includes standing, seated and lying postures.  Students must be able to get down and up from the floor under their own power.  The class proceeds at a slower, gentler pace than a regular Yoga I class.

Yoga for Seniors is a Yoga Level I class open to all but focused on the needs and abilities of older students.  This class focuses on extension, broadening, and strengthening of the legs, hips, trunk, and arms.  Standing balances are introduced includiing Vrksasana (Tree pose) and Ardha Candrasana (Half Moon pose).  Postures are modified as required to accommodate students needs and abilities. The class moves at a faster pace and involves more activity than Gentle Yoga.

Chi Gung (opening the energy gates) is based on the element of water. Areas of instruction will cover internalcomponents of standing, scanning (becoming aware of your physical and energetic bodies), cloud hands, and a unique spine stretch that awakens the energies of the vertebrae, relieves spinal tension, and activates the cerebral pump.

The outer dissolving process will be introduced, a process which begins to resolve and dissipate physical and energetic blockages in the body, freeing energy that was previously stuck. Students will also be introduced to three unique swings that massage and energizethe upper, middle and lower internal organs and give the practitioner a relaxed fluidity of movement.
